1. Gathering of information related to the event: type of event, subject, times,
lecturer’s characteristics and way of speaking (improvised speech or with written
text);
2. Meeting with the lecturer/s, if possible;
3. Analysis of slides and other presentation materials;
4. Evaluation of our “being in tune” with the event according to our fields of expertise;
5. Realization of a technical glossary to be integrated with the available material.
- Simultaneous interpreting: generally carried out
in couples, preferably with colleagues one has developed a certain synergy with;
- Consecutive interpreting: carried out by a single
interpreter translating long sentences;
- Negotiation interpreting: similar to consecutive
interpreting but carried out on shorter sentences;
- Chuchotage or whispered interpreting: similar to
simultaneous interpreting but carried out in the immediate vicinity of the client.
The term “chuchotage” comes from the French chuchoter (whisper) and this type of
interpreting consists in a translation whispered into the ear of the person who
needs immediate communication.
